Holiday. Time for yourself. Time to rest. Your mind, your brain, your body.

But I can’t find the inner peace. I need to spend quality time with the kids, have deep wine-fueled late-night conversations with my partner, catch up on sleep, get a tan, read those books I brought, fill my empty notepad brilliant new ideas, paint my nails… Oh yeah, and rest.

There is a to-do list for my rest-time!

Why is it so hard to find that pause button sometimes?

Buddhists (and Tony Robbins) know it: Energy follows attention. Your energy will go into what you pay attention to.

This is, by the way, why hitting a pillow when you’re angry does not necessarily work, you’re fueling your anger by giving it more attention.

But this also means that the busier you are, the busier you will be. And the harder it becomes to create proper resting time.

It’s a mentality thing. Luckily, we can train the brain.

Once or twice a year on holiday is not going to cut it. Better is to regularly train resting. For example, 10 minutes a day of doing nothing. No phone, no laptop, no book, no list, just staring into nothingness.

Then resting becomes another skill your brain has learned. And you can use it. On holiday for example, to really enjoy the moment.

So I’m going to turn off my laptop. And do nothing.

For a few minutes, at least. While my nail varnish dries.
